Faces full of pies

Advocates of more fun in the Square had their share of it yesterday when the 3ZM-EMI "Hellraisers" challenged "The Press” in a custard pie-throwing competition. The spectacular drew a large crowd, which rapidly thinned in areas in the line of fire. The rules were simple — no player to move off the pie-throwing court (an area of about 12ft x Bft), one pie to be in the air at a time, no-one to cross the centre line, no player to move once the

pie had left the hand of the opposition thrower, all spectators to watch at their own risk. “The Press" threw the first pie. The six players on each team all numbered, threw in order at any member of the opposing team. The pies were said to be six days old, and green in patches. Self-control for the first 50 seconds was admirable, but the recipient of the first pie, who caught it on averted face, charged

over the dividing line toi reciprocate in full, and 1 more. There was another 40 sec-; onds of fair play after his reprisal, and then the “spectacular” degenerated! into a sticky free-for-all.l The winners, decided by I popular acclaim, were) “the gentlemen of the press.” The organisers. 3ZM and E.M.L (N.Z.), Ltd, planned the contest to promote its newly formed: 3ZM-EMI Hellraisers I Club, which provides

members of the club with concessions to its. 1 i social functions. and raise funds for youthful charities. The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. M. L. ; I Underhill) granted the; teams permission to pelt: each other on the strip of ground in front of the Cathedral. After the fracas, the organisers, armed with brooms and 40 gallons of water, set to work to remove all traces of ' pies which missed the polythene "court.”
