■ But while they returned to , their beds the still :| smouldering mattress ignited the wooden I porch and by 4.30 the front of the house was j well alight. j 'One of the flat’s occupants, Mr N. Guthrie, woke up to the fire which was spreading down the hall. | The other men, Messrs ' M. van der looy, R. Guy, and J. Banks, tumbled I out of bed when Mr Guthrie raised the alarm. The fire brigade arrived soon after the men got clear of the house and the fire was quickly brought under control. ' Severe damage was caused to( the porch and there was' moderate damage to a I front room and the hall.!
