Diego Garcia base to be extended

. f.V Z. Press Assn—Copyright WASHINGTON, June 18 The United States Senate I Armed Services Committee has approved by 10 votes to 16 the expansion of the United States Naval station on the British island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean

The committee rejected a resolution by the Senate Democratic leader, Mr Mike Mansfield (Montana), to disapprove the project for which SUSIB.Im was appropriated conditionally last year.

The chairman, Mr John Stennis, said the committee was influenced by the testimony of the Secretary of Defence (Mr James Schlesinger) that the Soviet Union was increasing its forces in the area.

Mr Schlesinger showed the committee photographs which he said indicated that a missile-storage base was being constructed in Berbera, Somalia.
