Costs of hygiene

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 18.

The huge financial outlay required for the freezing industry to comply with its overseas customers’ meat hygiene requirements had brought the industry to a crisis point, the chairman of the Freezing Companies’ Association (Mr J. Fulton) said in Wellington today.

He was opening a meeting of the managements of freezing companies. Mr Fulton said the problem faced both the supplier and the processor, and it was important to realise that increased charges for killing and processing to oay for hygiene would deplete the value of the product to the farmer. i As a result of outside pressures, the industry had been precluded from setting charges which would comnletely finance the rebuilding and improving of 1 facilities.
