WASHINGTON, June 17.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the 25 largest defence contractors for possible improper payments at home and abroad. The commission’s chairman (Mr Ray Garrett) has or dered the Government agency’s division of corporation finance to assign enough staff members to the investigation to assure its swift completion. The probe was requested by Senator William Proxmire, chairman of the Senate banking committee, who said bribes, improper campaign contributions, and other ir regular payments had possibly increased the cost to the United States of buying major weapons systems.
