Potter on council
The New Zealand Industrial Design Council has been increased from nine to 11 members with the appointment of Mr J. D. Laird, of Nelson, and Mr N. Daly, of New Plymouth.
Mr Laird is a craftsman potter who founded the Waimea Pottery in Nelson in 1963 as an experiment in reviving a village workshop concept for a new approach to industrial relations.
As a consultant to the New Zealand Insulators’ Temuka pottery, he also designed the successful Temuka range of domestic pottery. Mr Laird was born in England where he was a freelance designer and secondary school teacher after complet(ing a national design diploma (course in graphic design in[ (London. I Mr Daly has specialised in (making protective helmets [which have received several awards. Another of his companies produces paper drums, cans and tubes for the packaging industry. He is a foundation member and past president of the Taranaki branch of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association.
