Tobacco advt. curb to stay
(N.Z. Press WELLINGTON. The Broadcasting Council had no intention of relaxing rules governing the advertising of cigarettes on radio and television, said its chairman (Sir Alister Mclntosh). The council also had no plans to relax the rules on the advertising of liquor but it was recognised that the present rules on liquor advertising contained some contradictions, and the council was examining these, he added. Sir Alister said that the Broadcasting Council was reviewing al) advertising and nrogramme rules inherited from the defunct Broadcasting Authority. These rules had been in force since the abolition of the authority in December, 1973. and the council intended to issue its own code of rules after the review was completed. “As I said recently, we have been looking at broadcasting standards generally, and in particular those governing television.” said Sir Alister. “We hope to keep rules and standards in line with accepted community attitudes as they develop, without adopting relaxations that have only limited' support from society generally.”
