Olga Korbut brings further laurels to Deft

Deft, winner of the "broodmare of the year award made bv the Trotting .inference for the 1973-74 season, completed a notable double at Ashburton on J aturday when Olfia Korbut won die New Zealand Sapling Stakes.

Twelve months ago ■Olga Korbut’s brilliant 'half-brother, Noodlum. I won the Sapling Stakes jin ridiculously easy style.

On Saturday Olga Korbut won with ease, beating one of the strongest fields in the history of the country’s most important event for two-year-old pacers. Deft is not the first mare to produce two Sapling Stakes winners, but she is the first to do so in consecutive years. Parisienne, herself winner of the race in 1936, produced La Mignon to win in 1954, while her brother. Golden Hero, won two years later, and is the most recent to achieve the feat.

On Saturday Olga Korbut paced the 2400 m in 3:13.55ee, a mile rate of ?:9.7sec. Spry, winner of the race in 1973, held the record of 3: Usee when the race was run over one mile and a half, a mile rate of 2:9.45ec.

Partnership Olgg Korbut is raced tn part(nership by Mrs A. A. WUson, ef Christchurch, and Mr Jehn McDermott, ef Halswell, a son of Mr E. T. McDermott, president of the Metropolitan Trotting Club and himself a prominent breeder, Elsinore, the dam ef Robalan, being one of the mares with which he has been associated. Like her half-sister. Olga Korbut, is trained at Ellesmere by Freema.s Holmes, who also drove her to her notable victory. Olga Korbut drew the second line on Saturday and she settled well back In the field, pushing dear ip the back straight. She Improved to be shading Smokey Lepez for the lead at the start' ef the long home straight. Then, without being touched 1 with the whip, she came on to win very easily by a short length from Smokey Lopez, with a length and a half back to Direct Magic, which finished with a damaged sulky wheel. Fancy Fred, which appeared to have his chance, was a short length back fourth, half a length In front of Lumber Box, which ran in several times as Richard Brosnan tried to ease him clear in the straight. Tarport Toby was only a 3hon length further back fifth, a little morC than a length in front of the disappointing favourite, Harbour Hanover, which produced nothing extra after movIng UP. to pe handy, over the last 1200 m. .<

•Great stayer “She’s developing into a grand stayer.” said Holmes of Olga Korbut Rfter tbe race. “She was very weak when first I worked her, but she has grown stronger month py month. I think she’ll be even better next season.” She will be prepared for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, a race won by Noodlum last November, but in the meantime her racing is uncertain. She has been entered for races in Brisbane, but a tfip for them Is uncertain. Also, no decision has been made about entering her tor the Juvenile Championship in Auckland later in the month. •

Olga Korbut’s win was too decisive for excuses to be offered for any of the beaten horses. Jack Carmichael, the driver of Smokey Lopez, summed up the opinion of most ef the horsemen in the event when he said: "The filly was just too good on the day.” Olga Korbut is a tall, leggy filly by Lordship, winner of this race in 1961 ana one of the leading New Zealand-bred sires of recent years. His dam, Deft, by Captain Adies, descends from First Water, ancesstress of a host of hlgh-elass classic and open handicap performers of both gaits. Her stud potential must be tremendous.
