Boxing trophy to Wellington
Canterbury’s leading amateur boxers, Karl Siave (Fidow’s Gym) and Gene Peters (Crichton Cobbers Club), were easy winners of their bouts — against J. August and S. Maida *— during the annual contest against Wellington at the Woolston Working Men’s Club yesterday.
Both fights were relatively tame affairs on an afternoon of otherwise exciting boxing. In spite of the victories gained by Siave and Peters, Wellington retained the Jack Solway Trophy, 7-5. Siave, one of New Zealand’s best light heavyweights, was a comfortable points winner over August. An extremely hard puncher, Peters forced a courageous Maida to retire at the end of the second round.
M. Jago, of Wellington, was not troubled to beat D. Riordan (Irish Youth Club) when 'Mr M. V. Druiy stopped the unequal bout in the second round. The most significant factor in .lago’s performance was his splendid straight left, and he continually found Riordan’s face with a classical jab.
A brother, G. Jago, gave an almost identical display — and enjoyed a similar result — against R. Adamson (Woolston W.M.C.). Another Woolston boxer, Bruce Mitchell, disrupted the family’s progress when his aggression carried him to a win over Stephen Jago, the eldest of the brothers.
Other results.— P. Stehlin (Wellington) beat P. Shadford (New Brighton W.M.C.); S. Pancha (Wellington) beat S. Henry (Woolston W.M.C.); P. Clausen (Woolston W.M.C.) beat G. Ranganui , (Wellington), rqferee stopped contest, round three; A. Tavia (Wellington) beat W. Benny (Woolston W.M.C.); P. Karavasa (Wellington) beat C. Adams (New Brighton W.M.C.). referee stopped con. test, round two; G. Elley (Wellington) beat B. Slater (Woolstl: W.M.C.); T. Tuataupe (Woolstori W.M.C.) beat T. George (Wellington). The referee was Mr M. V. Drury, and the judges Messrs E. Pocock. H. Lloyd, T. Mitchell and T. Wildes.
