Aust, beats 14-man England team to win rubber

(New Zealand Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE. Australia’s Rugby union team broke a Brisbane hoodoo in scoring its most important international victory for 10 years, when it clinched the series against England with a 30-21 win in the second test on Saturday.

The Australians made it 2-0 against England for their first series win at home since John Thornett’s side beat the Springboks a decade ago.

It was also Australia’s first victory at the Ballymore ground.

The Australians, after trailing 15-9 at half time, fought back against an England side weakened by the early dismissal of a prop, Mike Burton, ai ' scored 21 points in the second half.

In front of a closed English dressing room, the team manager, Alec Lewis, was quiet and reticent about his side’s defeat.

All he would say about Burton’s dismissal was: “A player is sent off — he is sent off. We were down to 14 men.”

Two minutes into the the match an England lock, Bob Beaumont, was forced to leave the field with a cut to his forehead after a brawl involving both packs.

A minute later, while Beaumont was off the field, Burton was sent off by the referee, Mr Bob Burnett. Burton’s dismissal was the I result of a head-butting incident involving an Australian prop, Stuart MacDougall, and I a late tackle on an Australian winger, Doug Osborne. England played two men ishort for several minutes un,til Beaumont returned to the I field with a heavy dessing oni his forehead and took Burton’s place in the front row. Effective For Australia, the captain and half-back, John Hipwell, stood out. He was clever in attack and determined in defence, continually urging on ithe Australians. A lock, Mark Loane, a flanker, Roy Price and the front rowers also had good games. In the backs, Ken Wright ihad another impressive game, I making covering tackles which broke promising England moves. ; For England, Alan Old j showed his class though out I of form and out of match |condition, while a lock, Andy • Ripley, was quiet but effective as were his back-row Dave Rollitt 'and Roger Uttley. Uttley moved to the second I row after Burton’s dismissal,

but continued to play well in the loose.

The England half-back, Peter Kingston, was worried into error by the Australian back row, especially Price and Tony Shaw. Scorers:—

Australia: Ray Price, Reg Smith, John Weatherstone, Garrick Fay, Laurie Monaghan, tries. Bob Brown, penalty and conversion. Ken Wright, penalty and conversion.

England: Peter Squires, Roger Uttley, tries. Alan Old, three penalties and two conversions.
