Abortions ‘would be dearer '
A Z Press Association' AUCKLAND. June 1
Legal abortions would cost close to $l5O, instead of $BO charged bv the Remuera abortion clinic, if the Medical Aid Trust were forced to move into a private hospital, says its legal adviser (Mr R. G. Clough).
Mr Clough estimates it would cost the trust about $200,000 to buy and equip a private hospital. Although this would raise the Brice of abortions, such an establishment could deal with these more cheaply than the cost of travel to Australian clinics, he said.
According to Mr Clough there are three hurdles — finding a private hospital, finding the money to buy it, an<j getting a licence to run it.
“I don’t expect verv much trouble with the first two,” he said. “But we are expecting difficulty from the Health Department in getting a licence.” Mr Clough said the department had already indicated it would not grant licences to private hospitals which intended only to perform abortions.
