Rangers stop Shamrock
Rangers put the first of iheir crucial matches In the Broadlands Southern League safely behind them when they overcame a fellow championship, chaser. Shamrock, 1-0, at Queen ! Elizabeth II Park on Saturday But although the tangle at the top was eased, it was certainly • not decided. Dunedin City accounted for Technical. 3-0, so that Dunedin and Rangers remained unbeaten and on 11 points. Lion Chatham Cup commitments next Saturday have forced a postponement of tiie first Dunedin-Rkngers clash, which was due on the same day. and it is now unlikely these two clubs will meet until the scheduled second-round matches ;on August 9. It is possible that ;the postponed match will have to be left to the end of the ‘season, for what might well be | a grand-stand finale to the comI petition. 1 Rangers deserved their victory lover Shamrock but very' nearly I squandered their chances. It was not until midway through the second half that Geoff Taylor squeezed home the only goal from a perfect through-pass byGordon Faichnie, but many better openings had been missed. Shamrock, lacking Rangers’ superior technique and giving away far too much ball from short passe? in dangerous positions, had far fewer opportunities to score. Mike Glubb nearly gave his side the lead in the first half, his well-placed cross hitting the far post and bcunc-i ing out. Then, with three! minutes left. Stan Woolascroft should have turned a cross front John Wilson into the net but put his header wide. The game was often abrasive, with three men getting their names taken and Rod Withers, the Shamrock right-back, being sent off. A shock result was the 1-0 win by Woolston W.M.C. over; W’estern, which had taken a point off Dunedin City the previous week. It was only Woolston’s second goal of the season and the club’s second 1-0. triumph. Results: Technical 0, Dunedin ■ City 3: Mosgie! 1, Queen’s Park 1: Shamrock 0. Rangers 1; Thistle 3, Roslyn-Wakari 4; Woolston 1, Western 0.
High Schoo! Old Boys suffered their first defeat in the qualifying section, going down unexpectedly to Burndale United, and leaving Timaru City as the only unbeaten team. Results: Cashmere Wanderers 3, Nomads United 0; High School Old Boys 0, Burndale United 2: New Brighton reserves 6; Ricearton 0: Timaru City 2, Northern Hearts 1; Rangiora 0, Christchurch United reserves 4; Halswell United 0.
