Carlton unbeaten in women’s hockey
Carlton maintained its unbeaten record in the Canterbury women’s hockey competition! when it scored all four goals in! an entertaining match against' I Cranmer on Saturday. Tlie closest of Carlton’s pur-! suers. Rawhiti kept within, one and a half points of the leader; with a 4-2 defeat of Digby’s., Burnside stayed in third position by having the better of Shirley. Results:— Carlton 4, Cranmer 0 Burnside 5, Shirley 3 Harewood 6, University 0 Rawhiti 4, Digbys 2 Points.—Carlton 6. Rawhiti 4X. Burnside 4. Harewood 3. Digbys! .2. FAST PACE i Cranmer began with a decisive istvle which worried Carlton’s defence for the first 15 minutes, i The ball was moved around the field quickly and Cranmer’s furlwards pressed but failed to seize scoring opportunities. As Carlton slowly settled play became very lively. Only one goal was scored in the first half —Carlton’s centre forward. Isohel Knight, guided home a forceful shot just before the interval. In the second half, neither team gained any real ascendancy . > but Carlton’s forwards made themost of their chances, whereas' Cranmer’s openings continued to be wasted. The Carlton inside left. Shirley Haig, kept up her I personal scoring average > two goals, and the inside right., jane Wilson, also scored. Carlton's goal-keeper, Lesley Shankland, was never flustered into error and the left wing. Judy Donnathoriie. trapped and centred well. Cranmer’s leit back. Jan Wright, played a valuable game for lier side HAREWOOD UNTROUBLED Harewood coasted along to a
comfortable victory over University. distributing its scoring evenly in both halves. Universit.', was dogged throughout the game by unreliable trapping and a lack of energy and at no time did it look a serious threat to Hare wood’s defence. The scoring for Harewood was begun by the inside left, Lyn Schulz, who soon made it 2-9. The inside right. Ann McKenna, added another goal before half time to give Harewood a good lead. The centre forward. Alison Sutherland, scored twice In the second half, and the left half, Maureen Rankin made the final score. 6-0. For University, the centre tor ward, Louise Paterson, toiled hard throughout the game, but > had no support ONE-SIDED GAME XX’itb a wide margin of differ* ence in the purpose and determination of the two forward lines. Rawhiti was not ip any danger of defeat by Digbys. No set pattern of play emerged, except that Rawhiti continuously mounted attacks and Digbys defence often broke them up. 'l’his pressure, however, finally brought results, and tta whit* scored two goals before half-time The inside right, Catherine Butt.-,, and inside left. Christine Duncan opened their team's account Digby’s centre forward. Maureer Darcli. narrowed the gap before the break.
Scrappy play prevailed for most of the second half. Rawhit scored twice, another goa] from Mrs Butts, and a penalty fliel from the left half. Chris Mr Auley. Digbys’ inside right Karen Lowe, narrowed the ga n scoring from a scramble of shot in Bawhiti's circle. BURNSIDE BEGIN WELL

Mis Denny scored twice before half time, and Burnside’s third goa' came from the replacement Adrienne Alleway. Shirley’s in side left. The right wing. Sue Morrise? continued Burnside’s scoring b the second half, and Miss Denn netted again to finish off he team’s efforts. Miss Verdel!er making a welcome return f Shirley’s forward line, score twice more, and her present made a difference to her side attacks.
