Search off for man
The search for the 17-year-old Christchurch tramper who has been missing in the Kelly Range, north of Otira, 'for a week, has been called ] off until the rivers are lower. A full-scale search with a helicopter and up to 40 men last week combed the Kelly Range and the Taipo River for the young man, Mark Grenville Whitehead, of 62 Cleveland Street, St Albans. Some of the man’s equipment was found scattered in Seven Mile Creek, which runs off the Kelly Range and into the Taipo. On Saturday a party of seven found his parka and primus wedged beneath a rock in the stream.
The search controller, Constable D. Webb, of Otira, said yesterday that there was nothing more to be done until the rivers in the area dropped and a more thorough search could be made of Seven Mile Creek.
He said a small party would probably go into the area about Wednesday, depending on the weather.
