Smugglers to die

(N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright > ALGIERS, June 1. The Algiers Criminal Court yesterday sentenced to death a Briton and a Dutchman after convicting them of drug trafficking. The Briton, identified as Harry Calleia, was arrested last December 8 at the Algerian frontier with Morocco. The Dutchman’s name was given as Arthur Pow. He was held at the Moroccan border with his fiancee on January 29, this year, as they tried to enter Algeria. The Court was told that 600 kilograms of narcotics were found in a boat towed behind the couple’s car.

Pow’s fiancee, Vilhelmina Johanna Hartjes, was released by the Algiers Criminal Court last month because of doubts over her involvement in the smuggling. Calleia and Pow were condemned to death under a decree issued on February 17, while they were in custody. This is the first time an Algerian court has imposed a death sentence for drug offences.
