'NEWSPAPERS TOO CHEAP'
(N Z Press ,4ssn—CopgrtohP I LONDON. May 30. Newspapers were still far' too cheap and no national' daily was likely to make aj profit this year, Mr Garry Thorne, advertisement; director of “The Times,”, said in London yesterday. He told a ‘Fleet Street has no future" conference' attended by national news-, paper advertising, directors, | journalists, and advertising agencies: “In my view, on every count newspapers are still far too cheap. We must adopt far more realistic pricing policies. “Most newspapers — and; I include “The Times” — would be absolutely delighted if we found ourselves in profit at the end of this year. I don’t think any national daily newspaper will be in profit.” He accused Fleet Street of being “over-competitive for many many years. “If one newspaper is undercutting another newspaper in such a way that they are both going to go out of business, that is mad-; ness. Fleet Street is guilty of this.”
