9000 chickens burnt

About 9000 three-week-old chickens died in a fire which destroyed a shed on a farm at Seadown near Timaru late on Saturday night, the Press Association reports. When units of the Timaru Fire Brigade, including a tanker, arrived soon after receiving a call at 10.59 p.m. the 4000 sq. ft building was ablaze from end to end, and nothing could be done to save it and its contents. The fire broke out when a strong north-westerly wind was sweeping the area and all brigadesmen could do was to dampen down the flames and pre; vent them spreading.

Mr P. J. Cummins, of Beach Road, Seadown, owned the 100 ft by 40ft plywood building in which six tons of mash, a 500-gallon overhead diesel tank and various agricultural sprays were destroyed as well as the chickens.

The cause has not yet been established.
