Checkers in lead in women’s basketball

Checkers took a big step towards regaining the Canterbury A grade women's basketball championship when the team beat Mairehau B and

University in a "double-header" at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Checkers now leads the competition with 10 points. Rangiora also had two wins on Saturday, both by narrow margins, and now shares second place with last season’s champion side, Mairehau A Botli have eight points. Mairehau B has four points, and University and United nil.

Mairehau A played only one match but gained a good win. It started strongly against University, and went on to win. 7733. It was a disappolntting performance from the University women, who had promised so much earlier in the season.

Jenny Armstrong was back to her best form for Mairehau. scoring 18 points. For University, Denise Mackay was in excellent form to top score with 10 points.

Rangiora won both its matches by a single point. In the morning. it beat United, 44-43, in a tense encounter. Rangiora held a marginal 28-23 lead at halftime. With lOsec to go, United went Into the lead and seemed to have the match won. But Rangiora came back to score right on time, and win. TENSE ENCOUNTER

Carolyn Winter and Sandra Kearney both showed up well for Rangiora, scoring 12 points each. The tall United centre, Barbara Tuck, was outstanding for United, scoring 19 points. Rangiora won its second match, against Mairehau B, 47-46, in another tense encounter. Rangiora led, 25-17, at half-time but lost ground in the second half. Only a goal by Carolyn Winter near time saved the match for Rangiora. Sandra Kearney was again in grand form, this time scoring 15 points. Lois Rollinson was a solid core in the mid-court position. Margaret Clark played a good game for Mairehau. shooting 13 points. Earlier in the day, Mairehau B was well-beaten by Checkers. 60-29. To half-time, Mairehau B kept itself in the match with good defence, and at half-time was trailing. 16-30. But in the second half. Checkers went ahead, and the final score

became of academic interest only. Sharon Rennell was in superb form for Checkers, driving beautifully and shooting with great accuracy, to score 21 points Checkers’s second win of the day was against University. They had to play a lot harder this time, but won, 83-49. University hung on well in the early stages, and Checkers’s half-time lead, 27-21, was by no means decisive. But when play resumed, the greater skill and experience of the Checkers players enabled them to gain increased control, and the outcome was soon beyond doubt. Sharon Rennell was again prominent, and Judy Baker also played a prominent role. They scored 16 and 18 points respectively.
