The New York Metropolitan Museum has put on display the Robert Lehman collection of Western European art, which, at SUSI7Om, is one of the most valuable privately-amassed art hoards in the world. The collection contains 3000 pieces, ranging from jewellery and majolica (earthenware) to Botticelli’s “Annunciation," drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrant portraits, and impressionist paintings by such masters as Matisse and Cezanne.
the collection took Mr Robert Lehman and his father, Philip, both investment bankers, 70 years to bring together. It is in the first of four new wings to the museum under construction to be finished. The others will include the Michael Rockefeller collection of primitive art, a new American wing, and the Temple of Dendur, a gift of the Egyptian Government.
