Remit on security
CN.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 15.
Ail members of the Securi ity Intelligence Service i should be New Zealanders, and should not be allowed Ito investigate the activities of other New Zealanders, the Labour Party’s conference decided, amid anger and confusion, this evening. The conference settled on both moves after a stormy debate lasting about an hour, in which it became apparent that the conference did not realise what it was voting for.
It decided in the first place that all S.I.S. members should be naturalised New Zealanders, and when asked what exactly that meant, the chairman (Mr J. G. O’Brien) said the press would work it out.
After an angry Minister of Justice (Dr Finlay) had accused delegates of making “damn fools” of themselves, Mr O’Brien put an amendment again — that only naturalised New Zealanders should be members of the S.I.S. — and this time it was lost. It had previously been carried on a card vote.
