Saturday violence

(N.Z. Press Association) LONDON A judge has said that appalling behaviour by football hooligans has made it virtually impossible for people in Britain to travel by train or walk the streets on a Saturday afternoon.

Lord Justice Roskill said in the Appeal Court that violence by soccer fans must be treated most severely both as a punishment, and as a warning to others. “It is a type of violence for which the perpetrators cannot always be brought to justice. The depleted police force cannot always man the appropriate places. Advantage is often taken of this by young thugs,” said his Honour.

The Court was hearing an appeal by a Chelsea fan, Anthony Johnson, aged 18,! against his conviction and sentence, of three years im-| prisonment, for offences: after the Chelsea-Manchester! United Match in March of last year. Johnson, a clerk, from Catford, South-East London, was convicted at the Old Bailey for affray, assault on police, and wounding with intent.
