Bishopdale plan approved

A SI 3,000 extension to the youth and other uses building at the Bishopdaie Community Centre was agreed to by the Waimairi County Council at its meeting on Thursday evening provided the Creche Association can find S3OOO towards the cost.

The works committee reported that Toe H had offered to lend $lO,OOO interest free for the extension. to be used by Toe H. and for a creche. Rental would be paid for the space, and Toe H had proposals for several community projects. The council agreed to install a lift at a cost of $15,860. the County Engineer (Mr A. J- W. Lamb) saying that additional money had become available. A suggestion from the community affairs officer (Mr R. Cosgrove) that accommodation should be provided at the centre for public health nurses was accepted. He said the room could be shared by other organisations.

Motor-cycles.—A by-law to control use of the land off Johns Road set aside by the council for use as a “scramble course” for motor-

cyclists was deferred for a trial period. A notice has been put up on the course asking that its use cease half an hour before sunset, and that residents should not be annoyed. The course is in use, though it is not finished.

Park lights.—The reserves committee reported that councillors had been concerned at the effects on residents if lights were installed at Ray Blank Park, as was wanted by the Riccarton Association Football Club. A decision was deferred for more information.

Landscaping. — A letter from the Housing Corporation replied to the council’s! concern at the aesthetic' appearance of new State 5 housing blocks. After explaining the variation in designs provided for, the corporation said that 3 per; cent of the contract price was included for landscape work, “sadly lacking in previous developments.”

Walkways.— After a discussion on the National Walkways Bill, the council decided to tell the Select Parliamentary Committee receiving submissions that the proposed walkways commission must have power to take private land, subject to right of appeal by the owner.
