The former United States i Secretary of Commerce, Mr Maurice Stans, who was Mr -Richard Nixon’s chief fundraiser in 1972. has been fined the maximum penalty of iSUSSOOO. but received no 'prison sentence on a convic- ■ tion involving campaign finances. “I want to assure your 'Honour that I did not intentionally violate any laws,” I Stans said, standing before the judge with his hands at his side. “What I did I did in good faith, and in the belief that it was the proper thing to do.” Stans, the third member of Mr Nixon’s Cabinet to be j convicted of a crime, pleaded 'guilty to three counts involving violations of the reporting provisions of the 1971 Federal Campaign Law, and |to two counts of non-wilful acceptance of illegal campaign contributions.
