The stick-it-up-your-jumper Rugby tactics used in Australia recently have come

under close examination by the code’s international lawmakers in Britain.

The former English Rugby Union president, and one of England’s two representatives on the international board. Mr Dudley Kempt, yesterday denounced the move.

“Stuffing the ball up one’s shirt seems contrary to the ‘sporting spirit’ of Rugby,” Mr Kempt said. But England’s leading referee, Mr Johnny Johnson, said that it was not illegal.
