Defeat for Kiwis

(K.2.P.A Staff Correspondent TOWNSVILLE.

Scoring three sensational runaway tries, North Queensland beat New Zealand, 20-16, in the opening match of the Kiwi’s Rugby league tour yesterday. North Queensland led 15-6 at half-time.

Tries for North Queensland were scored by Peter Diezmann (2), Ashley Smith, and John Kynaseon, and Frank Daisy kicked four goals.

i Scorers for New Zealand were Warren Collicoat. j Dennis Williams, Phillip Orchard, and Mocky Brereton tries, and Collicoat two ■ goals. J North Queensland won the I vital scrums in the last 15 j minutes when the New Zealanders were trying all they could to overcome the fourpoint final deficit. The Kiwis made many mistakes in the first half, in handling and kicking, and several times lost possession Orchard scored one good try but was unable to catch Diazmann when the Australian scored his two winning tries. The home side was in front 5-0 after two minutes, but New Zealand led 6-5 after 20 minutes. But then came the runaway tries and the Kiwis were always in difficulties after that.

New Zealand’s next match is against Central Queensland on Sunday.
