“Top cop” a woman
j (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. ! It took Sylvia Oveual) 111 [years to become a police-1 [women — but she made it] [in style. She was top graNi-j |at. in the Bruce McCallum 1 recruit wing of 101 which passed out of Trentham Police College. Sylvia, who is 28, wanted to become a policewoman when she was 17.
“But my parents wouldn’t let me. They told me to get a qualification,” she said. So she qualified as a pharmaceutical chemist and one in her homeland, England.
She migrated to New Z aland last year, and worked as a chemist before the urge to become a policewoman came again.
I just got tired of being a pharmacist — I thought it was about time to get out of the rut, ’ she said.
“1 wanted to meet people and I liked the variety in the work so one Sunday I went down to the police station and made some enquiries.
I “I really wanted to join [the police" in England, but (the money is better out here.”
Wellington is to receive the largest share of the graduates — 25 — while Auckland will get. 20, Palmerston North eight, New Plymouth five and Napier four, with the others being spread round the country. Miss Ovenall will go to Napier.
