Many homes not insured
J GV Z. Press Association' ' WELLINGTON, May 13. At least 15 per cent of New Zealand homes and business premises were not insured against fire, which meant that they were not covered against earthquake damage either, said the Minister in Charge of the Earthquake and War Damage Commission (Mr Connelly) today. Opening the South Pacific ' Regional Conference on Earthquake Engineering, in I Wellington, Mr Connelly said that it appeared many people lived in the hope that earthquakes would not occur, or that if they did they would be “somewhere else.” j There were reminders from ‘time to time, which only the i foolish would ignore. “For example, the force j seven earthquake that hit the Inangahua area in 1968 resulted in 10,500 claims being ‘ lodged and 52.4 m being paid iout by the Earthquake Commission,” Mr Connelly said. “We can only guess what would be the effect and cost if a similar sized earthquake positioned to inflict maximum damage on, say Wellington. But perhaps a bill of slooom is a realistic estimate,” he' said.
