A one-under-par 72 by i Kaye Maxwell (Grange) high-; lighted play on the opening; day of the New Zealand junior girls’ golf tournament at the Castlecliff course yesterday. Miss Maxwell, however, scored a 79 in the afternoon, and missed winning the major first-day trophy. This honour went to the title-holder/ Susan Maling (St Clair), who; had rounds of 77 and 74, and took the best gross aggre-l gate on a count-back. In third place was Sherry West (Pukekohe), with two! rounds of 76. Other leading scorers were.—B. Ormsby 1 (Te Puke), 76, 78; P. Marks : (Harewood), 76, 78; C. Ramm (Taupo), 81, 80; T. Russell (Lochiel), 81, 81. S. Clephane! (Russley) had 89, 85.
Tennis.—Judy Connor was the only New Zealand winner in the qualifying rounds of the British hard-court tennis championships yesterday. She beat Miss C. Cerato (Australia)* 6-0, 6-0. Russell Simpson and Christine Newton were both eliminated.
