After a mediocre start, the I main game developed into a fast display of ooen hockey halfway through the first spell. Only one goal was scored in the half. It came soon after the start from Carlton s inside right. Jane Wilson. Rawhiti was slower to I settle, and apart from some hard work from the inside right.! Henrietta Carroll, allowed Carl-j ton still held an edge but ton to dictate much of the nlay Then both teams settled down I and the ball began to range over the field at a quick pace. CarlRawhiti looked able not only to! contain it but to play its own game as well. Fifteen minutes of the second I half went by before Rawhiti equalised with a firm shot from a comer bv the inside left. Cath-: erine Butts. Carlton was not to be outdone, however, and Mrs I Haig soon out her team ahead; with a hard shot. Showing fine form. Mrs Haig I romoleted her hat-trick with two' more goals before the final; whistle. Ope of these was the| perfect finish to «om» master-| fol dribbling. Despite the score.i Ran-hlti’s goal-keeper. Sue Mol-1 oney. rose to *he occasion and I her blocking kept out several; dangerous shots. BAD TRAPPING Harewood was dogged all through its game against Burn-; side with trapping lanses. Burnside was not similarlv affected and this gave it an edge of one I goal in each half. The first was h' the right wing. Susan Morrissev. and the second from the centre forward. Helen Denny. . Bumside’s forwards combined well using crisp short passes. j particularly among the inside'
trio, and they received excellent sunoort from their half line. Harewood fust could not link w-ith real purpose, and its attacks were static Wendv Stock, at centre back, was steady under
attack and cleared well to her fonvards. with Maureen Rankin well positioned at left half. Burnsides left half. Susan Lynn, showed good form.
LOST CHANCES For the second week in a row. Cranmers forwards showed a disappointing lack of form Scoring opportunities were let go by. where normally they would be pounced upon The defence
worked hard and set an example. ) but to no avail. Both half lines had a busy game, and the wine halves s Wai ng their parses hard and fast to switch nlay. Universities forwards combined well and looked more willing to seize scoring ooportuniti*»s. although they had fewer chances than Cranmer. The solitary goal came from a scuffle for possession in Cranmer’s circle and the inside left. Louise Paterson.' found a gap to the back of the net.
FRUSTRATIONS The defensive players in High's team could readily be forgiven for any feelings ofjs frustration they suffered as a i result of the>r game with Shirley. No matter how often or 11 from which flank the blue de-|j fence set up their forwards' 4 attacks, no score resulted, either! 1 through errors or missed shots. (
Shirlev had the one real scoring chance, and an five forwards were there to take it. The centre forward Annette Cooper, scored to rive Sh’rlev a halftim* and futi-time lead of 1-0. Digbys b ad m«st of the possession. 'vith their defenc* combining nicelv. but the nnlv support thev received was from the
inside left. Ailsa Howman. Shirlev’s forwards worked back well and showed good judgement in their calls to each other.
