Pegasus seat to student
Miss Vicki Buck, a 19-year-oid political science student at the University of Canterbury, retained the vacant Pegasus ward seat on the Christchurch City Council for the Labour Party in the byelection on Saturday. She is the youngest person to win a seat on the City Council.
Miss Buck, who joined the party three years ago, had an eiection-night majority of 1051 over her nearest opponent, the Citizens’ candidate, Mr A. S. Cockbum. About 400 special votes remain to be checked and counted, but they will not affect the result.
Two other candidates, Messrs R. S. Clarkson (Values) and D. J. Crawford (Independent) lost their deposits.
Polling was very light, only 27 per cent of the 20,780 registered voters in the ward exercising their right. The total number of votes cast on Saturday was scarcely more than the number Miss Buck polled last October in the local body elections, when she was only 125 votes away from a seat. The result of the byelection does not change the 11-8 division on the council, the vacancy having been caused by the death of a Labour councillor, Cr W. Massey.
Election-night figures were.—
Miss V. S. Buck (L) 3263 A. S, Cockburn (C) 2212 R. S. Clarkson (V) 150 D. J. Crawford (I) 86 Informal 69 Majority for Miss Buck, 1051.
