At the end of a full round of matches Carlton led with nine points in the six-team competition and it will meet Burnside in one semi-final. The runner-up. Harewood, will play University in the other. The final will be played on May 1, the same night as the senior men’s. The finals of the senior reserve and secondary schools’ grades will be played on April 29.
Entries are more than double those of last season with more than 350 players involved in the sport two nights a week since early March.
■ Already the organisers are striking problems with next season’s competition. Many clubs have indicated they want more teams entered, and the indoor hockey sub-committee is expecting another substantial increase, to the extent that games will probably have to be played three nights a week. The women’s clubs were complaining because they could not get enough teams in, and the schools’ each wanted another side playing, said Dr S. G. Maister, a member of the committee. Commenting on the matches to date. Dr Maister said they began in a friendly manner, but this had changed and the games were now more serious.
