Library borrowing fees up

Rentals at the Christchurch Public Library have risen for the first time infive years. The increases were approved by the Christchurch City Council at its meeting last month, on the recommendation of the cultural committee, and introduced on April 1. The library’s popular section (new books) rose from 12c and 6c to 20c and 10c. Rentals for adult borrowers who are not in the council’s rating area rose from 10c to 15c and intermediate borrowers (under 19), from 5c to 10c. Children’s rates will remain at sc. Magazine rentals rose from 6c to 10c and gramophone records from 35c to 40c. Picture prints are up 5c to 60c and originals have risen 20c to $l. Subscriptions for records and pictures have risen 40c to $2.60 annually. There will be no change in fines for .overdue books, or the charge for borrowers’ cards and reserves.
