One team only for yacht race
(N.Z.PA. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY. A bld by New Zealand to enter two teams instead of one in the Southern Cross Cup yachting series at Sydney in December was rejected only after considerable discussion, officials of the Cruising \ Yacht Club said on Monday. ' They said the rejection was “not done lightly.” However, it would have meant a change in the cup’s charter, which states clearly that overseas countries can enter only one team each. The series is for off-shore yachts, and each team is represented by three boats. Mr Max Lees, secretary of the C.Y.C., which organises the race, said the one-team rule for overseas countries applied to all countries. The United States wanted to enter three teams this year, but had been told it could field only one. The matter had been discussed several times, and might be discussed again, but it was too late to change the charter In time for this year’s series. Entries are sure to come from New South Wales, Victoria, New Zealand and the United States, with possible entries from Japan. Hong Kopg, Tasmania and Britain. "When the Southern Cross series was started in 1966 the C.Y.C, formed the rules which allowed one entry per Australian state and one entry per overseas country.
Several years ago New Zealand was permitted to enter two teams but now the C.Y.C. has gone back to its original rules and allowed only one.
