April 14. ’ The national woolcraft < I festival in Whangarei has been a triple triumph for the t Matawai Hill Country Spin- . ners, of Poverty Bay. , The team of six women i won the Carved Mere which.; is the trophy for the “Kiwi-: 1 craft” competition, and also;' the Silver Spinning Wheel. I * the glamour prize of the fes- ( tival. ( And in the history of the' festival, theirs is the first; team to win both trophies in the same year. Women of the team are: spread over a large country, area out of Gisborne, and they had only one practice,; for each event before they.' came to Whangarei to taker part in the festival. Second placing in the Sil-(: ver Spinning Wheel went to '; another area team. Wairoa. It was at Wairoa that the: national festivals had their beginning. In the past it has: had several piacings. Third place went to the. team from the host group last year, the Woolly West Coasters. This team won the; ,Small Silver Wheel the first: itwo tears it was awarded ini 1 1968 and 1969. |
