Mr A. Squire (left), manager of the poppy department of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association, prepares the poppies for its annual Poppy Day appeal on Friday. With him is the secretary-manager of the association (Mr J. Green). The association needs collectors for the appeal; This year the association has prepared almost 600,000 poppies—its biggest order, according to Mr Green. The poppies go to branches between Invercargill and Wanganui. About 95,000 are expected to be sold in Christchurch. About 22 persons of pensionable age make the poppies in their own homes throughout the year. This year at least 20 wreaths have also been ordered. These include four to be sent to Noumea for the Anzac service to which a New Zealand delegation has been invited for the first time. Another will be sent to Sydney. The Poppy Day appeal is the main source of income for the association’s many welfare activities. Mr Green asks that anyone who can give an hour, particularly in the city, to contact him at the main office in Armagh Street. Last year sales on Poppy Day were worth $94,445.
