Rugby coaching course is pilot scheme
New and important ground in. Rugby will be broken this evening with the introduction of al pilot course of instruction for! coaches, run by the Canterbury! Rugby Union in conjunction witn the Christchurch Technical Institute.
Mr L. J. Russell told last evening’s meeting of the union’s management committee that the scheme had met with an enthusiastic response, but it had been necessary to limit the number of candidates to 22. There will be theoretical and practical sides to the course, with special emphasis being laid on the motivation of players. A lecturer at the institute. Mr I C. R. Hockley, who is a former 1 Canterbury prop and the present New Brighton senior coach,! will conduct the course, with assistance from a national-ranked referee. Mr A. R. Taylor, and a former Canterbury represents-' tivc and senior coach. M r S K. Henderson.
The course, which is for coaches of under 15 grade teams and below, and also junior club captains, will be spread over five weeks. The candidates will be able to use their knowledge on a team under training conditions before facing the examiner. Further schools for other grades of coaches depended on the outcome of the pilot course and the availability of Mr Hockley. he said.
New job.—Dr J. D. Stewart, who is at present in Uruguay, will be approached to see if he is available for the post of coach of the New Zealand colts team, which will make a four match internal tour this season.
Senior games.— Only six of the eight fourth round senior matches will be played on Saturday. April 26. The other two games. Shirley v. Christchurch and Linwood v. Bumside, will be held at Rugby Park on Anzac Day.
Reason.—The Marist club's application to hold a seven-a-sfde tournament next month was turned down by the national bodv because the club had hired a promoter tn organise the contest for profit. Thjq. said the nninn. was in conflict with the 1.R.8.’s regulations on amateurism.
Suggestions.—Canterbury will form a sub-committee tn make submissions to the three man working group emonwered to hring down an accentable scheme for a national Inter-nrovinciM competition hv the end nf n*xt year The gmup plans to visit all unions to discuss the scheme.
