Two acts of arson

Christchurch detectives are investigating two fires in Gloucester Street over the last four days which they sav were acts of arson. Just before 10 p.m. on Monday a fire caused minor damage to a house at 270 Gloucester Street. The fire was started by a container of kerosene set alight against the weatherboard rear wall of the house. The fire brigade arrived before the fire could get a hold. Last Friday afternoon fires were started in three bedrooms of a house at 292 Gloucester Street. Two radios and a suitcase were stolen at the same time. Two bedrooms were moderately damaged and the third was severely damaged. At the same time as this fUe was burning a house at 272 Gloucester Street was hureled and rings worth $l7OO were taken. Detective Senior-Sergeant A. G. I. Rodgers sa’d vesterdav that although the fires involved acts of arson it was not vet dear whether or not it was the same person or people in each case.
