Communications Ministry
Sir, — The Minister of Justice (Dr Finlay) is also Minister in Charge of Publicity. Your editorial of April 11 appears not to understand this, nor to be aware that the Government (and its predecessors) have had since 1950 an “Information and Publicity Services Division” (in the Tourist and Publicity Department) whose job it is to help newspapers, magazines, radio and television convey to the public factual “information about the Government’s actions and intentions.” This is no “group of bureaucrats deciding what ought to be publicised” but a team of competent journabsts giving a service that should be used much more by governments (as the country’s management) and the media (whose job it is to inform the public). As do most New Zealand newspapers, “The Press” regularly uses much material distributed by this agency, but seldom acknowledges the help it thus receives in its role as communicator. — Yours etc., 43 YEARS A JOURNALIST. ■ Wellington. April 11, 1975.
