Mr Tait trying for executive

The latest member of the Canterbury Shop Assistants’ Union, Mr Gordon Tait, has been nominated for the executive of the union.

Mr Tait, the chairman of a bookselling company, the owner of 99 per cent of the shares in it, and employed as its bookshop manager, was admitted to the union on April 8. Nominations for the executive closed on April 12. Mr Tait’s nomination was lodged by post on April 11. The secretary of the union (Mr B. Alderdice) confirmed yesterday that Mr Tait had been nominated and seconded.

He was unable to say if an election would be needed. “It is in the hands of the returning officer at present, and everything will be known in good time,” said Mr Alderdice.

The annual meeting of the union will be held on May 12. when the executive will be elected.
