'Press ’ sponsor of chess again

“The Press” will again sponsor a chess team competition for Canterbury secondary and intermediate schools during the second term. Since the inaugural tournament in 1971 entries have increased each year, and there was a record entry of! 24 in 1974. Because of the expected response again this year, it has been necessary to allow no more than two teams from any school. There will be two grades and a school entering only one team will be expected to; enter for the A grade. However, a single team entered by a school will be accepted for the B grade at the discretion of the organisers. A school may enter two teams if it feels that the standard is sufficiently high for A grade. Intermediate schools will automatically compete in the B grade tournament. Conditions remain basically the same as in previous years. Schools are invited to submit teams of six players and two reserves. Each team must have a liaison officer

whose home telephone number is requested for circulation to other schools. Games, unless completed, will continue for two hours or until 30 moves have been made. When clocks are used each player must make 30 moves in one hour. A player not making 30 moves concedes the contest by default. I Because of the large numi ber of matches which required adjudication last year, captains are asked to. consider unfinished matches and agree on a result. Only when there is no distinct advantage should a game be sent in for adjudication. SIGNED I Matches for adjudication must clearly show the position of the game and be signed by both players as correct. Prize money will total $lOO, and will be divided in the ratio of $5O, $3O and $2O. It will go to the funds of the successful schools. Each team will be supplied with scoresheets and result cards. Entries, which close on May 12, can be addressed to “The Press” Schools Chess Competition, P.O. Box 1005, Christchurch.
