Another rescue mission?

“The American evacuation of Phnom Penh looks like a rehearsal for another, much bigger and more complicated, exercise — the evacuation of Saigon,” the “Financial Times” says in a leading article today. “This is the only possible interpretation of President Ford’s foreign policy address to the joint sessions of Congress last week.
‘There are still about 6000 Americans in South Vietnam. There are also at least I million South Vietnamese whose (lives might be endangered by i a Communist victory, though this figure could be reduced [perhaps to about 150,000 if only those who had worked directly for the Americans or in the higher reaches of the Saigon Government were included. “Even taking the lower estimate. however, it is clear that a rescue operation would he enormously complicated, and could even be jettisoned bv the South Vietnamese fighting among themselves in their eagerness to get out. or holding some of the 6000 Americans hostage.”
