Northern horses dominate day

i’ The Sppimt St’i'.-.e' BLENHEIM. With horses from as far afield as Ellerslie in the north and Invercargill in the south there was a definite interisland flavour to the Marlborough Racing Cluh’s Centennial Cup day at Blenheim on Saturday. Bui the northerners dominated the day. They took eight of the 16 races, including the T.A.B. double with -the Hastings-trained Elsthorpe and the Wairarapa mare Sonora. The two southern victories were most appropriate. The first came from the highweighter. Kash, which is [trained in Christchurch for [the Marlborough Racing jClub president (Mr J. R. L. | Loe) and his father, the club patron, Mr A. F. Loe.

The other winner was Torches, which is raced by a

* syndicate headed b\ the Marlborough Rugby pelsonality Mr J. .1. Josephs Torches is trained at Water lea by K O'Brien and \va..ridden by F. H P--pt-. the Blenheim jockey. Eishorpe normally a trontrunning type, was tried from behind in the Hl-horse Marlborough Centennial Cup and he finished solidly t< beat Regal Ration, which had slipped to the lead at the straight entrance, and Elcano. which covered a lot of extra ground early. The second leg. the Duncan handicap. went L Sonora, which raced in the second bunch before winning from Surge Again, which rocketed into second and Triverton. which also made up a lot .of ground.
