STARTER FINED

I (X.Z. Press Association > INVERCARGILL The Wairio Jockey CJub’s programme was delayed 25 minutes on Saturdas alter a false start to the Woodlaw Novice No. 2. tn which four of the runners—Loch Morlich (G. Harris). Lord Rico (A. Tait), Irimond (R. Waters), and Royal Chord (D. Adams)— raced in earnest for almost the entire journey and were later scratched.

! The four riders, unaware of a false start earlier being declared, were well inside the final furlong before being alerted to the situation by the clerk of the course (Mr L. W. Insall). After veterinary examinations and also requests from their owners the committee allowed them to be scratched from the actual race without penalty, and total investments of $B3B on the four horses were ordered to be refunded. The committee found that there had been a malfunction of the gates and. although the starter had called a false start, he had failed to indicate clearly to the false start steward who was positioned about 200 metres from the start of the incident and accordingly the false start steward had not indicated a false start to the riders. The committee found this was negligence on the part of the starter (Mr A. P Langford, and imposed a line of $5O.
