26 workers laid off

(N.Z. Press Association)

TIMARU, April 13.

A complete shift of 26 women has been laid off at the New Zealand Insulators factory at Ashburton because of the economic recession.

The manager of the Temuka-based company, Mr R. D. Guthrie, said tonight that this was a group of casual workers, and there was no present intention of putting off any permanent staff. The women had been hired eight months ago to work as a twilight shift for a few hours a night to assist in handling orders when the company was busy. Such shifts had been employed before for short periods, Mr Guthrie said.
