British tobacco companies have rejected a Government proposal that they contribute up to $12.5m a year to the nation’s publicity cam-) paign against smoking. Dr David Owen, Minister-! of-State for Health, told Par-) liament that he was appalled; at the industry’s reaction. i He said tobacco firms! spent Sl24m every year on! advertising to persuade people to smoke. The Government, which! claims 50,000 people die pre-j maturely every year because! of smoking, spends only I 5600.000 a year on its health campaign against the habit. ( Describing the proposal asi unacceptable last night a to-! bacco industry spokesman said the Government already! collected $2213m annually in) taxes from smoking.
