Press Association) WELLINGTON. ’ A former Labour Mayor of Christchurch was appointed to the Local Government Commission because of his many years of local government experience, said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr May) in Parliament ' Mr K. M. Comber (Nat.,' Wellington Central) had ; asked why a former Labour ■ mayor “who was rejected by free vote of the people at the last local body' elections,” had been appointed. He was referring to Mr N. 'G. Pickering, although Mr Pickering’s name was not mentioned.
Mr May said Mr Pickering had had 12 years experience in local government.
