Technical students unhappy with grant

Christchurch Technical Institute students are concerned that teacher trainees are being paid much higher allowances than other tertiary students.

The secretary of the 1 Christchurch Technical Institute Students’ Association (Mr G. Moore) said that a meeting on Friday of more than 800 students thought the present system gave teacher trainees an unfortunate privilege. . “The meeting, which was the best attended we have had, certainly made it clear .that unless the Government 'increases greatly technical students’ bursaries, technical education will suffer irreparable damage.” he said. It was absurd that many full-time technical institute students were allotted less than $2OO a year while

teachers’ college students could get as much as $5OOO. the average teacher trainees receiving more than $2500 a year. The Christchurch Technical Institute Students' Association abolished the posts of president and vice-president, and the association would be run for the next year by a committee, whose chairman would be changed regularly. This was designed to give students more say in their association’s operation.
