'Beyond the call of duty’
Members of Alf’s Imperial Army who have performed notable acts of gallantry beyond the call of duty, and have shown outstanding battling ability, will be acknowledged at a special ceremony in Cathedral Square at lunchtime today.
Ten members of the 60strong army, which believes in non-violent ritualistic play forms to fight its friends and seeks to find ways to release aggression without using violence, are to be presented with awards at the ceremony.
The Town and University regiments of the army will fall in for the official ceremony.
Colonel T. Catford will present two of the soldiers with the Victoria Disc, the highest award given by the army to soldiers who have been particularly courageous.
Three other soldiers will receive the John Bull award for battling ability and others the Gibraltar Cross. The camp followers (ladies who carry soldiers’ baggage and make their tea) will be given George VI medals. Colonel Catford said the group was formed in 1973 to campaign for pacifism. In play fights, which are encouraged to release aggression, “The Press” made particularly good swords, especially the heavier week-end editions.
