Hand progress

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, April 11. The sewn-on hand of Michael Maheno, aged 16, seems to be a medical success. The hand was cut off by a circular saw at Taupo early last month. The medical superintendent of Waikato Hospital (Dr G. L. Brinkman) said today that the hand was surviving, and circulation was normal after surgery to correct a blockage. The youth now had

some movement in his fingers, and plastic surgeons had applied skin grafts where the hand was rejoined. He faced several months of “re-education” in the use of his hand before doctors could be sure of the success of the surgery, but he was progressing well. Dr Brinkman said the youth should be discharged from hospital fairly soon.
