Orchestra board to meet soon
Future developments jin the administration of I the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will not be made public until [April 16 when the new | board of management has its first full meeting. The new president of the 1 board (Mr N. H. Buchanan) said last evening that he could not say anything until April 16. The obvious task facing the board was the restoration of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council grant, and the maintenance of continuing local body support. Discussions with these bodies were continuing, he said. Mr Buchanan met the players at their request on Tuesday. A statement from the chairman of the Players’ Committee (Mr D. K. Vaughan) said that the meeting passed a resolution saying: “The players of the Christchurch Sympony Orchestra have full confidence in the members of the newlyelected board of management, and in their ability to resolve
the difficulties facing the Civic Orchestra Foundation.” Copies of the resolution went also to the arts council and the chairman of the interim management committee. Mr Buchanan said the remainder of the meeting was taken up with preparations for Mr Southgate’s first Christchurch concert as conductor of the orchestra. Judging from the response when players present were asked if they would cooperate, it was certain that a full orchestra would be on-stage for the concert on May 4, Mr Buchanan said.
